The beautiful paths through the tennis and cricket clubs near Queen’s Wood, which my daughter and I call “The Secret Way” Shhhhh…
Dear Reader,
Last week, I was ill with the horrid coughing flu-type bug that’s been going around. So with that, and the yoga therapy study these last four days, I’ve not had the time to get into writing mode this week.
I’m so looking forward to the Solstice, gathering with friends, making merry and setting my heartfelt intentions for the year. The resting, feasting and general cosy vibes of Christmas are all beckoning. It is my wish that you feel contented, warm and loved during this darkest part of the year.
Here is a winter poem that resonated with me… it reminds me of my ideas for the years ahead, that are not quite ready to be out in the world as yet…
Next newsletter is on the 1st January… see you on the other side!
With love and good wishes,
Julia xxx
WHITE-EYES BY MARY OLIVER
In winter
all the singing is in
the tops of the trees
where the wind-bird
with its white eyes
shoves and pushes
among the branches.
Like any of us
he wants to go to sleep,
but he’s restless—
he has an idea,
and slowly it unfolds
from under his beating wings
as long as he stays awake.
But his big, round music, after all,
is too breathy to last.
So, it’s over.
In the pine-crown
he makes his nest,
he’s done all he can.
I don’t know the name of this bird,
I only imagine his glittering beak
tucked in a white wing
while the clouds—
which he has summoned
from the north—
which he has taught
to be mild, and silent—
thicken, and begin to fall
into the world below
like stars, or the feathers
of some unimaginable bird
that loves us,
that is asleep now, and silent—
that has turned itself
into snow.

This is a wonderful poem. Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets and mystics of our modern age. Her work goes so well with yoga and the practice of presence.
I am actually working on a book of yoga poetry for teachers, students, and anyone looking for further connection on the mat. I would love if you subscribed! I post poems, the stories behind them, and hope to build an audience so I can approach a publisher with a decent list. https://coriefeiner.substack.com
I love this poem.
