Dear Yoga Practitioners,
I’m writing this as the ancient comet 3I/ATLAS flies by our beautiful planet, after passing Venus, Mars and the Sun. It is the third interstellar (3I) object to be identified by modern astronomers. We can tell it’s interstellar as it is not gravitationally bound by the sun. This remarkable object is travelling at a speed of over 36 miles per second, and has glowed in different colours, green, blue, red and golden.
Matthew Hopkins, an astronomer at the University of Oxford, estimates that 3I/ATLAS is between 7.6 - 14 billion years old. That would make it the oldest object ever detected. It’s kind of amazing that this ancient object from beyond the rim of our Milky Way is visiting us during Advent, Solstice, Yuletide. It is a potent point in time on our planet, when we are feeling quite overwhelmed by war, division, separation and lack of care. Yet during this dark time, many people feel in their hearts that 3I/Atlas is a harbinger of positive change.
If we put on the news we get a very sorry picture of humanity. However, when I chat to people I get a profound sense of deep wisdom, heartfelt love and a faith that eventually, we will work through these dire times. Many people realise within their heart that change comes from within, that the only way through these difficult times is to be open to connection across the divides that are stoked by the news channels and social media. I’m always greatly heartened by such conversations, they fulfil my heart-felt belief that humans are tending towards peace, wholeness and kindness.
What we believe about Life is very important. According to the Hermetic Laws of Correspondence our inner experience is reflected in our outer experience of the world around us. We are each the witness to a slightly different view of the world, which is greatly influenced by our thoughts, feelings and beliefs. This ancient way of viewing the world has more scientific ground than we have been taught to believe.
Quantum theory is widely recognised to offer the most accurate scientific worldview. I used to believe that this quantum view was only true for the subatomic realm, but recently I’ve been reading book called The Quantum Revelation based largely upon the work of John Archibald Wheeler. Wheeler is the unsung hero of theoretical physics and was not afraid of the very profound and mind bending implications of quantum theory. He was not afraid of the woo.
According to Wheeler, as is now evidenced by many developments in quantum biology, quantum theory operates at every level of reality. It underlies the way our brains work and how birds navigate extensive migration paths. Every day items like computers, phones, MRI scans and GPS navigation systems are made possible through the practical application of quantum mechanics. And every day life itself is infused with the quantum.
The quantum view is analogous to the yogic worldview in that our Universe and every part of what we see in our everyday world as solid matter (Prakriti) is actually created by and imbued with Consciousness (Purusha). As Consciousness is primary (that is, there can be no matter without consciousness) the way we view our world, as Iain McGilchrist would say the way we attend to our world, both creates and greatly influences our experience of it.
The universe does not exist “out there,” independent of us. We are inescapably involved in bringing about that which appears to be happening. We are not only observers. We are participators. In some strange sense, this is a participatory universe. Physics is no longer satisfied with insights only into particles, fields of force, into geometry, or even into time and space. Today we demand of physics some understanding of existence itself.
— John Wheeler
It’s not woo woo. It’s science. And it makes common sense.
Once we humans really get the profound implications of what quantum physics, what the Universe Itself, is showing us, we can get on with creating the more beautiful world that we know is possible. It really is about seeing the good in ourselves and each other. What I’m learning in my psychotherapeutic studies is that despite outward appearances, even in our darkest moments as human beings there are parts of us that are striving towards wholeness, safety, love and acceptance. The way our parts go about trying to find this wholeness might look dangerous, destructive, malicious even. However, if we can speak to those parts (of ourselves and others) who are desperately needing to be loved and accepted we can create a more caring, compassionate and beautiful world.
It’s time to let go of old paradigms of blame and futile hope that someone (the government, the second coming, Elon Musk….) will save us. The work of creating a better world is there for each of us to do. It’s both individual and relational work. Our relations are many - our family, friends, neighbours, communities, animals, birds, trees, foods, soils, waters, air… All Our Relations.
This is work that lightens our burdens, and eases our life path. The more we seek out, foster and attend to the good in ourselves and others the more we raise up the whole.
And on that note, I wish you a wonderful Solstice, a peaceful Christmas and an Inspiring and Joyful New Year!!
With love and good wishes,
Julia xxx
